How To Choose A Paint Finish From Matte To High Gloss

Buying paint for the interior of your home can be a fun experience, starting with choosing the color and ending with you standing back, looking at what looks and feels like a brand new room. The choice of paint finish, or sheen, can be the most confusing part of choosing paint.

Paint finishes range from high gloss to matte flat, depending on how much light the paint reflects. This guide will help you understand the different finishes you will need to choose from, as well as the best finishes for certain applications.

Matte finish paint reflects the least amount of light. Because it is very porous, it stains, scuffs and dry burnishes more easily than all other finishes. When wiped down it changes reflectivity and tends to become more discolored. Matte finish white is ideal for textured ceilings. Matte finish paint is never recommended for bathrooms, kitchens or laundry rooms where moisture is prevalent. Likewise, it shouldn’t be used in any high-traffic areas. Since we do not walk on or lean on a ceiling, it’s the best place for it. are produced for furniture to give it an aged chalked finish. Handling it will further burnish it, giving it an aged pastel effect.

Flat paint reflects very little light and is more porous,. Flat paint tends to stain and scuff more easily than other finishes. Because it is less reflective, it works better on patched surfaces. A flat finish is ideal for ceilings and low-traffic areas where the walls rarely come into contact with dirt or objects. Flat paint is not recommended for bathrooms, kitchens or laundry rooms where moisture is prevalent. Likewise, it should not be used on trim or in high-traffic areas of the home.

{category_img id=51008 type=small align=right link=yes} Eggshell Finish

Durable and with just a touch of sheen, an eggshell finish is typically used in medium-traffic areas such as living rooms, dining rooms and adult bedrooms. The slight sheen of eggshell lends subtle warmth to the room without the glare of glossier finishes. An eggshell finish is easier to clean than a flat finish, but it will still take more scrubbing to remove dirt and stains.

{category_img id=50955 type=small align=right link=yes} Satin or Low Luster Finish

Moderately glossy, a satin or low luster finish works well in kitchens, bathrooms, kids’ rooms and other higher-traffic areas. It’s easy to clean and more durable than flat or eggshell, but because it’s also a little glossier it may show more imperfections such as dents and patches in the wall.

{category_img id=15304 type=small align=right link=yes} Semi-Gloss Finish

Too glossy for living rooms and bedrooms, semi-gloss is nevertheless highly durable and ideal for laundry rooms, bathrooms, kitchens and other high-moisture, high-traffic areas. It is a good choice for trim around doors and windows, and ideal for baseboards. The glossier the paint, the more variation in color; the color of semi-gloss will appear inconsistent in larger rooms as light hits differing surfaces and angles in a different way.

{category_img id=50975 type=small align=right link=yes} High Gloss Finish

Rarely used for interior applications, a gloss finish is extremely reflective, appearing almost as shiny as porcelain. If used at all for interior painting, gloss is reserved for artistic details or special finishes on cabinets or trim.

When in doubt, it is best to choose an eggshell or satin finish. If you’re still not sure which you would prefer, purchase a small sample of each and paint them side-by-side on a small area of your wall. Depending on how much light the room gets, one may be far more attractive to you than the other.
